Objectives: This qualitative study explored the failed weight-loss experiences of college students with obesity and overweight.
Methods: The study adopted a phenomenological research design, and nine female students participated in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews from November 2018 to February 2019 and analyzed using Colaizzi¡¯s method.
Results: Three theme clusters that described the failed weight-loss experience of college students with obesity and overweight were extracted. These clusters are ¡°Reduced willingness and motivation to control own weight.¡± ¡°Lower self-esteem as a result of recovered body weight, and their sense of failure increased.¡± and ¡°Determining again to go on a diet to improve their self-esteem.¡±
Conclusion: The study revealed that the participants self-esteem decreased because of their repeated failures in controlling their weight, and they became more helpless as a result of the disappointment they experienced. However, despite the participants¡¯ inability to control their weight, they understood the need for persistence and the role of personal habits in everyday life.
